Who We Are
Rainbow in the Outback is a proudly regional, community‑driven festival that celebrates creativity, identity, and belonging in the heart of Far West NSW. Based in Broken Hill—Australia’s iconic Outback arts capital—we bring together locals, travellers, artists, producers, and allies for a vibrant weekend of colour, culture, and connection.
We exist to create a space where everyone can show up as their full, authentic selves. Our festival blends drag, music, performance, storytelling, and visual art with the unique spirit of the desert, honouring Broken Hill’s legacy as a bold, inclusive, and culturally rich destination. We champion local producers, celebrate queer culture, and showcase the creative talent that thrives across our region.
As an incorporated not‑for‑profit, Rainbow in the Outback is built by community for community. Every event, partnership, and program is designed to strengthen regional pride, support local businesses, and welcome visitors into the warmth and wonder of Outback hospitality.
Rainbow in the Outback isn’t just a festival—it’s a celebration of identity, resilience, and the joy of coming together under the big desert sky.
Our Team
Brendan Barlow
Brendan was born and raised in Broken Hill, growing up with the quiet but constant challenge of navigating his sexuality in a regional town that didn’t always make space for difference. After moving to Adelaide in 2008 to find clarity and confidence in himself, he eventually returned home with a renewed sense of purpose and a deep belief that queer people deserve visibility, pride and belonging in the outback. His lived experience, community advocacy and passion for creating safe, inclusive spaces led him and his partner Alvin to establish Rainbow In The Outback, Broken Hill’s first pride‑based festival. Alvin’s unwavering support has been central to bringing the festival to life, with the pair working side by side to build something joyful, welcoming and transformative for the region. Brendan’s family has also played a vital role, offering encouragement, love and hands‑on help that has strengthened every step of the journey. Together, they have helped shape a festival that celebrates identity, community and the power of being proudly yourself in country Australia.
